General Observing / Chuck Edhat March article on Leo & Aries
« on: March 13, 2014, 03:48:51 PM »

Once again, Chuck McPartlin makes the night sky understandable. Here is his latest Edhat.com article on March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb:
http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=130413

Find more articles of Chuck's at Edhat by searching for "McPartlin" or "Astronomy" there.

Also, Google should work if you put in "site:www.edhat.com mcpartlin" w/o the quotes

Thanks to ChuckM, MaxN, and MartinM for manning the extremely bright location and bringing a Rock from Space, Jupiter, the Moon, and club handouts to the many folks. A few thin clouds took away a bit of the sharpness, but the bright walkway lights made it tough to see even the Orion constellation. Maybe a shade can be made for the lights that keep the steps in the light, but block the light at eyepiece height of the telescopes? This will require a little calculation, design, and approval from the Marketplace, I think.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has recorded the never-before-seen break-up of an asteroid into as many as 10 smaller pieces.

Fragile comets, comprised of ice and dust, have been seen falling apart as they near the sun, but nothing like this has ever before been observed in the asteroid belt.

Outreach & Events / RTMC 2014
« on: March 13, 2014, 03:40:16 PM »
Don't miss out on the RTMC at beautiful hot dusty Camp Oakes near Big Bear Lake, May Thu 22-Mon 26!

Last year the SBAU was well represented, let's do it again. Featured presentations are the astrophotography workshop and the Kepler mission. Aside from that there will be many other presentations that are worth while. Don't forget to grow your beard, bring 2 sleeping bags and good wine.

It will be dusty, and so laid back that you may want to find some distractions such as hiking, seeing the lake or visiting the Starlight Festival nearby. It is fun to walk around the grounds and talk with all the hobbyists who are more than willing to show you their equipment.

SBAU Website / Link to Chuck McPartlin stories on Edhat.com
« on: March 13, 2014, 03:38:57 PM »
Not sure how one would put the search results link from Edhat showing Chuck McPartlin's astronomy stories onto SBAU.org, but he does such a good job of outreaching there. At http://www.edhat.com you can search for "mcpartlin" and get, for example (by topic/date/viewers/comments):

SBAU Calendar / Lunar Eclipse April 14th/15th
« on: March 13, 2014, 10:20:46 AM »
The first eclipse of the year is well placed for observers throughout the Western Hemisphere. The eclipse occurs at the lunar orbit's ascending node in Virgo. The apparent diameter of the Moon is close to its average since the eclipse occurs nearly midway between apogee (April 08 at 14:53 UT) and perigee (April 23 at 00:28 UT). This is the first of four consecutive total lunar eclipses in 2014 and 2015 (see Lunar Eclipse Tetrads).

The SBAU will have Telescopes and Binoculars setup at Westmont Collage Observatory for a Eclipse Viewing Party starting at Monday/Tuesday, April 14/15, 10:30 PM to 2 AM

The Moon's orbital trajectory takes it through the southern half of Earth's umbral shadow. Although the eclipse is not central, the total phase still lasts 78 minutes. The Moon's path through Earth's shadows as well as a map illustrating worldwide visibility of the event are shown in Figure 1. The times of the major eclipse phases are listed below.
          Penumbral Eclipse Begins:  04:53:37 UT
          Partial Eclipse Begins:    05:58:19 UT
          Total Eclipse Begins:      07:06:47 UT
          Greatest Eclipse:          07:45:40 UT
          Total Eclipse Ends:        08:24:35 UT
          Partial Eclipse Ends:      09:33:04 UT
          Penumbral Eclipse Ends:    10:37:37 UT

General Interest "Our Moon -- What would we do without it?"
is a meeting notice for a lecture on the moon. Peter does a terrific job on his lectures so I thought that there may be AU members who would be enjoy it.
It would also likely be a hit for an AU meeting program.

Presented by: Peter Beuret
