833am pre-show conversations
00:00.000 lightning but no thunder heard by some, TomT refreshments, ChuckMcP re: Red Nova, Mike Brown planet Nine on 60 minutes.
03:05.962  gang here, Baron naming TT, JW, CMcP, JerryW planet formation meeting was great, Josh Garber, geologist.  ChuckMcP scary email on Red Nova, CM-probably orange to our eyes, bright as Polaris.  2022.2  Mike Brown, planet nine, 10 earth masses. JW-not Mike Brown demoting Pluto, just found another object like Pluto.  B-great time to be in astronomy.  CM-story of naming Makemake.  B-BruceM?  CM-skiing.  JW-TomW a last min guy.
08:10.578 phone ring, no caller; B-annoying calls technique, JW-once told phone company he could help them block calls.

09:50.422 CM-first tuesdays

9:05am
11:01.111 SBAU Show Part1: Universe in the Radio acapella, B-2nd, 4th Mondays, TomT will intro others B-this is an outreach, 6 of these get a free membership!  2nd Saturday at museum, 3rd Friday at Westmont.  CM-school science nights, email outreach@sbau.org. B-TomW entering studio.  B-red nova?  TomT-Michigan Christian college discovered, they say they are better in astronomy, so Westmont should be able to do this as well.  CMcP-two stars merging in 5 years, JW-like throwing more logs on fire.  TomW-Roche lob of atmospheres combining, like CM said, peanut shaped.  JW-gravity pull of one star to other.  B-orbiting each other, CM-minutes apart, accretion disk with one particle 2022.2.  TT-how detected? CM-see light pattern decreasing, JW-other stars have done that in past w/ same light curve, CM-in other cases, they see nova first and then go back in archive of astro photos. song: "when I was a child I tuned in to a galactic community"

22:10.010  acapella song cont.: "I look up to the sky at night...are we all alone..." B-intros, TT-food guy, JW-SB remote sensing, CM.  B-satellite between sun earth?  JW-Lagrange point, million miles; James Webb telescope avoids heat signature from earth.  B-?  JW-they will see fainter objects, Brown dwarf stars.  B-do stars use fission? fusion! Jupiter would not qualify?  CM-about 80 Jupiters would.  JW-need 10M degrees in center. B-if on planet around a red dwarf, ok to look at a Red Dwarf star?  CM-depends on distance  TT-eyes might be bigger  JW-may look like white to those evolved around that.  Proxima planet seen by light variation, JW-spectral lines moving, gives estimates of how many planets. B-how many exoplanets? CM-about 4K now. TomW-wobbling stars, Jupiter mass causes a 5m/s pivot around center of gravity.  earth causes 1m/s CM-and that can be measured.  TT-so when planets line up, that causes earthquakes?  JW-urban legend, 1964 that happened and folks claimed Calif would fall into the ocean.  B-Q on TomW classes, wants to audit. TW-electronic circuits, life sci physics.  self taught in electronics due to physics grad student. JW-dinosaurs back when I did that.  B-magnatars talk in class? hard on iron in blood? JW-other things to worry about if near one!  song "cruising at 78, over a hilltop, sun in her eyes...caught by a speedtrap..."

34:19.055  acapella song "xrays...heavy stars...supernovae...if we had xray eyes"  B-shopping center setup a problem?  CM-we choose the bright Moon nights there.  B-Tuesday workshop at Museum?  JW-3 of us there to help.  B-James Webb?  JW-Helium cooling to due Infrared work, 4 kelvin.  B-spectrum, E-M, eyes visible light.  Gamma, xrays?  JW-fuzzy boundaries between named areas.  low energy, longer wavelengths.  B-visible betw infrared and ultraviolet.  JW-organic molecules bonds can be broken by xray wavelength.  Gamma is shortest, highest energy.  B-radio waves can be made by oscillating crystal.  How make gamma wavelength?  JW-smash atoms.  B-speed of light for E-M waves? JW-yes. Some sun items slower than speed of light.  photons in sun?  CM-emitted and absorbed many times, so gamma to xray to visible.  JW-nuclear fusion.

44:06.377  acapella song "last century...latitude so low, you are a cloud in history..." B-spectroscopy how do frequencies line up?  CM-temp indicated by spectra. JW-sun spectra shown to Baron.  JW-black lines caused by colder gas above the sun absorbing light frequencies due to those elements.  B-92 elements JW-some elements share lines TomW-continuous color from just inside sun surface, like a filament in a light bulb, black lines give the sun's signature.  cooler gas absorb certain freq lines, Kirchhoff laws https://www.e-education.psu.edu/astro801/content/l3_p6.html , helium discovered in sun from spectra lines.  CM-burn Ca in flame you get yellow light.  Some elements of sun are 3rd/4th generation from other stars.  song: "calm and cloudless night, shaking of universe to occur, Galileo used telescope for very first time"

51:18.247  song "he saw Jupiter w/ 4 tiny moons" B-SBAU will come and sing these  TT-for a steep price B-lots of Astro talks in town, Tabby's star CM-public has Neil Degrasse Tyson as a rock star getting public excited.  TomW-freq of visible 10^15, gamma 10^19.  background radiation of universe is about 1cm wavelength, 21cm is used by astronomers.  JW-billion waves in an inch for visible.  B-want to audit class JW-maybe Westmont has policy to check on that.
